Reading strategies:
Reading strategies help students read authentic documents. These strategies will help them be more successfulin decoding a challenging passage at every level. These steps can be:
Step 1 – pre-reading
Step 2- prediction
Step 3- skimming
Step 4- scanning
Step 5- looking for cognates
Step 6- looking for meaning through context
Step 7- careful Reading
Step 8- semantic map
Step 9- summary
Step 1 – Pre-reading:
Before Reading, use prior knowledge to predict what information may be in the selection.
Step 2- Prediction:
They can get clues from the title, the subject, ore ven an accompaying picture.
Step 3- Skimming:
Read through the selection quickly to find any additional information.
Step 4- Scanning:
This information can augment and modify information from the pre-reading stage.
Step 5- Looking for cognates:
To further refine the understanding of the passage, look for words that are similar to words in english .
Step 6- Looking for meaning through context:
Sometimes get the meaning of unfamiliar words by looking at the context where the words are found.
Step 7- Careful Reading:
Too often students begin Reading with this step. They find the passage difficult, get discouraged, and quit reading. With the preceding steps, students are better equipped to read a selection.
Step 8- Semantic map:
Map reading helps clarify the main issues
Step 9- Summary:
In this step you will make a summary of reading in which you can check whether you have understood the reading.
